As we kick off the summer season, Engel & Völkers is excited to celebrate Pride Month. First and foremost, this means recognizing our network of LGBTQ+ community members and allies. Thanks to you, the Engel & Völkers brand has cultivated an inclusive culture like no other.
Pride Month also gives us the opportunity to actively reflect on the importance of meaningful, lasting support for our LGBTQ+ friends and colleagues—as we are equally aware of the essential work that remains to be done in the real estate industry and beyond.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, we fully endorse their mission statement to advocate, elevate, and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community:
The Alliance seeks to advocate for fair housing for all and promote LGBTQ+ homeownership; elevate professionalism in the industry through education and networking; and celebrate diversity and inclusion in our members and allied partners.LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance
At Engel & Völkers, we know the advantages that come with homeownership—both financial and emotional. It’s a life experience that anyone can share and a right that everyone deserves. However, a historical lack of accessibility and agency for the LGBTQ+ community has limited their collective homeownership. According to polling by the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, 20.7% of the LGBTQ+ community experiences discrimination from real estate professionals while purchasing a home, and 17.4% experience discrimination from sellers. Further, 8.9% of respondents disclosed that the seller refused to sell to them because of their identity, and 4% identified lenders as quoting them higher mortgage rates and/or worse terms.
In the pursuit of equity and inclusion, there is work that remains to be done. Yet, on the horizon lies progress and possibility, two things Engel & Völkers is ecstatic to lead the real estate industry towards. We are proud of the leaders and advisors in our network who are community members and community allies—all doing whatever they can to ensure that the communities we are building today establish a more equitable tomorrow.
